On Wednesday August 8, a 16-year-old girl with a nine month old daughter was gunned down in a shooting that left a second person wounded. According to Oakland police, the shooting incident occurred in the 2700 block of Talbot Avenue near Interstate Highway 580 at around 10:30 p.m. It was believed the victim’s name was Tatiounn Turner, because of a balloon that was left at the scene reading “RIP Tatiounn Turner,” although police had not positively identified her at the time of the shooting.
A second victim was taken to an area hospital and was expected to survive. On Thursday morning, several mourners gathered at the scene of the shooting across from Oak’s Market and Liquor Store. Many attached balloons to a fence in front of a residence at the location, one which read “You’ll be missed.” News reports stated that several of the mourners were crying.
At the time news reports were released, no arrest had been made in the case although Crime Stoppers of Oakland and police were offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The victim’s cousin, 15-year-old Hadari Askari, was killed just last month in a shooting; her father was as well, in a shooting that took place in Oakland four years ago according to Brandon Turner, the victim’s uncle. Reports said that Tatiounn lived below East 14th Street on 99th Avenue, and that she went back to school after her baby was born.
